Applied Materials

I interned at Applied Materials for 2 months between June and July 2025 as a Full Stack Development Intern. It was my first real dive into corporate engineering, and it set the foundation for everything I know about backend development today.

The Project

I worked on their codebase for an R&D use case application. The work was challenging and exciting—I was developing features that were in an experimental phase, which meant there was room for creativity and problem-solving.

During my time there, I developed 2 features, both of which were exploratory in nature. It was fascinating to work on something that wasn't just about implementing a spec, but about figuring out what would work best for the use case.

Learning from the Best

The most valuable part of my internship wasn't just the technical work—it was the mentorship. I worked closely with a senior engineer named Jagadeesh, who taught me most of what I know about backend engineering.

He showed me how to think about system design, how to write clean and maintainable code, how to debug effectively, and how to approach problems methodically. The lessons I learned from him have stayed with me and continue to influence how I approach engineering challenges.

The Technical Foundation

Applied Materials gave me the technical foundation I needed. It taught me how to work with large codebases, how to collaborate with other engineers, and how to deliver features in a professional setting.

More importantly, it showed me that I genuinely enjoyed backend engineering. The logic, the architecture, the satisfaction of building systems that work efficiently—it all clicked for me during those two months.

This internship was the beginning of my journey in tech, and I'm grateful for the experience and the people who made it so valuable.
